The Sunday Night host on Channel Seven pleaded guilty in Burwood Local Court this morning to driving at 81km/h through the tunnel last November, an incident he described as a "momentary lapse."

Munro, 58, said his car was set to cruise control and he didn't realise there was a variable speed limit in place of 40km/h.

But an RTA representative told the court there had been six signs in the tunnel alerting motorists to that limit.

A letter from Father Chris Riley was submitted to the court on Munro's behalf, citing his excellent character and good deeds in the community.

But it wasn't enough for Magistrate Teresa O'Sullivan, who banned Mr Munro from driving for three months and fined him $300.

The media veteran, who hosted This Is Your Life for Channel Nine where he worked for 22 years, didn't want to share his thoughts with reporters outside court, jumping into a car driven by his wife - who had her mobile phone pressed to her ear.
